Changes to the rules governing the activation of prepaid SIM cards in Australia
On Monday May 30th 2016 the Department of Immigration has enforced a tightening of the rules around the activation of prepaid mobile SIM Cards in Australia.
Background
In order to activate an Australian SIM Card the identity of the user of the SIM card has to be verified. Australians can use their drivers license for this, but visitors from other countries always had to use their foreign passport
together with the associated visitor Visa as a means of identification.
Prior to May 30th 2016 your prepaid SIM card could be activated as soon as your visa for your trip to Australia had been issued. As visas are usually issued anywhere between a couple of days and several months prior to your
arrival in Australia, that meant it was easily possible to activate your SIM card while you were still at home, i.e. prior to arriving in Australia.
When you activate your SIM card the validity of your visa is checked, and with the change effected on May 30th 2016 your visa is now 'validated' only once you have cleared customs in Australia.
This means that the activation of your SIM card is now possible as soon as you arrive in Australia, but not earlier.
Changes to MojoKnows products
